Practicing Green

The projected effects of climate change and the growing awareness of the need for environmental sustainability are having a vast impact on how businesses make decisions and conduct their operations, creating new challenges for our clients. We believe these challenges require an innovative way of delivering legal services and raise the bar for what a law firm should do.

As companies move to respond by developing innovative technologies and products and implementing more sustainable practices, Nixon Peabody LLP has launched a “legally green” initiative to help our clients achieve their business goals and join with them in promoting environmental responsibility. The phrase “legally green” signifies the firm’s unique combination of legal experience, thought leadership, and responsible citizenship, and our commitment to serving our clients and our community well in the changing world.

While many law firms have separate practices that occasionally handle sustainability issues, at Nixon Peabody we’ve integrated our league-leading practices as very few others can. Our attorneys understand the issues that arise in the context of emerging industries such as Cleantech, renewable energy, and green building, and we are developing innovative solutions.

Our legally green initiative also involves continuing in our role as thought leaders in the sustainability arena. While our primary focus is on helping our clients realize their business goals, the firm encourages the public dissemination of lessons learned as part of our commitment to the shared challenges we all face.

An equally important part of what it means to be legally green involves being responsible stewards of our environment. Our operations director is working closely with our office administrators and a dedicated team of stakeholders comprised of attorneys and staff to implement sustainable measures and practices firmwide. And we are encouraging our attorneys and staff to implement sustainability measures in their lifestyles and homes as we recognize that each of us can make a difference, and that by acting collectively we can make even greater progress.

Nixon Peabody is proud to be one of the first law firms in the nation to embrace sustainable building practices. Our San Francisco office has been certified by the United States Green Building Council under the program for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), making Nixon Peabody the first law firm in the U.S. have an office LEED-certified in the category of “Commercial Interiors.” In the coming months, other Nixon Peabody offices will also pursue LEED certification.

Whether it’s helping to negotiate and structure your next transaction involving acquisition of an equity interest in wind, geothermal, or solar facilities; developing a sustainable real estate project; financing a project with renewable energy tax credits; protecting the intellectual property associated with your innovative Cleantech technology; advising you on siting and permitting issues relating to a proposed energy facility; forming a green investment fund; working with you to navigate the emerging legislative and regulatory proposals involving climate change; or sharing best practices about how we can further our mutual goals of adopting sustainable measures and practices, we look forward to growing greener with you in the years to come.
