Interviewing FAQs

How do I apply for a summer associate position? NP visits law schools and attends career fairs each recruiting season. Law students should check with their career services professionals for information regarding our on-campus date.

Due to time constraints, we are unable to visit all law schools and colleges and welcome law students to apply to us directly by submitting a cover letter, resume, copy of transcript, and writing sample (10–20 pages) to the office(s) of interest for consideration for a summer associate position in our online application system.

Who will I meet with on campus? Our on-campus interviewers are both partners and associates of the firm who can best answer questions about the firm, our geographic locations, practice areas, and our summer program. Typically, you will meet with attorneys who are alumni of your law school or attorneys from the office of your interest.

When will I hear back from NP on whether I will be further interviewing with the firm for a summer associate position? Our goal is to contact students within one week of their on-campus interview to invite them for an in-office interview. We will respond to each and every candidate we meet on campus.

If I am not interviewed on campus, but have applied directly to NP, what are the next steps? Each application received is reviewed. Should your application be pursued, you will be further contacted by us.

If I am invited for a call-back interview, what can I expect? A mutually convenient interview date will be scheduled for your visit to our office to meet with four to five attorneys. Our recruiting professionals will provide you with a complete interview schedule in advance of your interview date. Each interviewing attorney will spend 20–30 minutes with you. Additionally, you can expect to meet with one to two associates over breakfast or lunch so that you can ask questions in an informal setting and learn more about the firm during your visit.

Should I wear business attire for my interviews? While the firm’s dress policy is business casual, formal business attire is preferred for candidates.

Will I be reimbursed for interview expenses? Out-of-town applicants are reimbursed for all reasonable expenses (i.e. hotel, airfare, transportation, and meals) incurred in connection with their visit to our offices. Our travel department is available to coordinate travel and any necessary accommodations needed. We ask that you complete a NALP Travel Reimbursement Form and submit it to us for reimbursement. We also share travel expenses with other law firms with which you may be interviewing.

What is Nixon Peabody’s hiring criteria? We look for candidates who have the potential to become successful attorneys and who can hold their own in a very competitive environment. Specific credentials include strong analytical and problem-solving skills, creativity, and sound judgment. Enthusiasm, energy, and ambition are also valued. And, of course, candidates must have a strong academic record, keen verbal skills, and exceptional writing skills.

I’m interested in more than one office. How does this work? After meeting with us on campus, your application will be reviewed thoroughly and provided to the appropriate office hiring partner with a recommendation for further review. Should you be invited to interview further with us, arrangements will be made for you to interview in one or more of our offices.

Will I need to bring anything to the call-back interview? If we do not already have your file complete, we will ask you to bring an updated resume, a copy of your law school transcript, a writing sample (10–20 pages), and two to three references.
