Summer associate program              Is NP for me?           Recruiting

Our summer associate program lays the foundation for your career at Nixon Peabody. The program is intended to introduce you to as many opportunities as possible. We believe the more you learn over the summer, the better career choices you will make. You will be exposed to a range of practice areas and take part in billable client work and pro bono projects.

In addition to exploring the practice of law, we also encourage our summer associates to get to know Nixon Peabody attorneys and the cities in which we work. We provide many options for socializing, including attorney-hosted parties, concerts, evenings of dinner and theatre, sports events, golf outings and firm softball games. The key word is options. We don’t over-organize your summer. We give you the flexibility to explore what interests you, in and outside of the office.

One Class Coast-to-Coast

At Nixon Peabody, we operate as one firm. Our practice areas extend beyond geographic locations. Just as our attorneys collaborate across offices on client work, so summer associates in different offices participate as one class. Even as you attend the program through one of our eight offices, you will be part of a firm-wide program. We bring the summer associates together weekly to learn about national pro bono efforts, and hear about the direction of the firm, firm business and operations, and to hear from practice group leaders.

Mentoring & Training

The emphasis of our summer program is to provide law students with a realistic view of life as an associate at NP. You will be provided with the opportunity to learn skills through a combination of training programs and mentoring. We provide our summer associates with training in practical business skills ranging from setting goals and building personal networks to time management and workplace etiquette. Every summer associate is paired with at least one mentor to provide guidance before, during and after the summer program.

Nixon Peabody’s collegial environment and extraordinary resources make the firm a terrific place to begin my legal career. As a summer associate, I addressed substantive legal issues, interacted directly with clients, worked closely with partners and associates, and received constructive feedback.

Evaluations

We view the summer program as a learning opportunity for law students and
an investment in future talent for the firm. That’s why we  provide as much feedback as possible. Attorneys who assign and review projects take the time to evaluate your performance as assignments are completed. Formal reviews are provided midway into the program to let summer associates know how they are doing and what they can improve, and a final evaluation is provided at the end of the program.

I was blown away by the thoughtful and thorough feedback I received on all my assignments – no matter how large or small the assignment. — Summer Associate, Rochester
