Chicago, IL. Nixon Peabody is pleased to announce the arrival of Daniel J. Schwartz and Jonathan M. Lively to the firm’s Chicago office as partners in the Intellectual Property and Complex Commercial Disputes practices, respectively.

Daniel J. Schwartz
Dan is an intellectual property trial lawyer for complex patent litigation, representing some of the world’s largest industrial, medical device, and telecommunications companies. He has argued cases in federal court and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office relating to trade secrets, trademark, copyright, and licensing. Dan also advises clients on technology issues, with extensive experience in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, imaging technologies, medical products, telecommunication networking architecture, GIS/geo-location technologies and database management, and Internet-related technologies, among others.
“Focusing on the intersection of law, technology, and competition helps me forge strong client relationships by understanding their businesses, goals, and challenges,” said Dan. “Artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies will continue to emerge as dominant forces in all aspects of industry and society, and I look forward to working closely with clients to navigate through this dynamic space.”
Dan attended Northwestern University School of Law and earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, also from Northwestern University. In his free time, Dan has served on the board of the Anti-Defamation League and in leadership positions in his sons’ youth baseball organizations, is an organizing committee member of Cycle for Survival (Chicago), and teaches patent law as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University.
Jonathan M. Lively
Jon focuses his practice on defending product manufacturers and property owners who face litigation in areas including toxic tort/asbestos/talc, environmental, products liability, professional liability, transportation, and other civil matters. In jurisdictions nationwide, he oversees all aspects of the litigation process for thousands of matters. He acts as national trial counsel for several of his clients and appears in courts across the country.
“Businesses are seeking legal counsel who understand their products,” said Jon. “In my two decades of practice, I understand both sides of a case, and I look forward to working with my colleagues at Nixon Peabody in providing optimal strategy and counsel to clients.”
Jon attended Washington College of Law at American University and earned a B.A. in Economics and Public Policy from Kalamazoo College in Michigan. Outside of his practice work, Jon serves on the Board of Directors for Chicago Professionals for Parkinson’s Research. Jon played soccer during his undergrad years in Kalamazoo and has played professionally in England.
