Washington D.C.’s growing commitment to affordable housing

Last week marked two important announcements for supporters and developers of affordable housing in the District of Columbia.  On Thursday, Mayor Muriel Bowser presented her Fiscal Year 2017 Budget and Financial Plan to the City Council.  It includes another $100 million commitment to the Housing Production Trust Fund.  You may remember that the Mayor announced the allocation of $82 million from the Trust Fund in January to support the preservation or production of approximately 800 units of affordable housing.  We understand that the City will issue a second RFP for Trust Fund dollars and other federal sources on March 31st.
In addition, on Friday, Mayor Bowser announced the availability of 17 District-owned sites for development as affordable housing, libraries, recreation centers or re-opened schools.  Last year, the Mayor made a similar announcement regarding the economic development of just 6 sites.  The RFPs for the 17 sites are scheduled to be released in the coming months.
