Providence, RI. Nixon Peabody is excited to announce the arrival of R. David Cruise, the former legislative affairs director and senior advisor to Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo. David joins Nixon Peabody’s Providence office as counsel.

Working with Nixon Peabody’s Government Relations and Public Finance practices, David will advise a wide variety of businesses and organizations as they navigate legal, regulatory, and compliance matters that affect their companies.

“There’s never been a more important time to help our clients understand and solve complex issues involving their interaction with the government,” said Stephen Zubiago, Providence partner and leader of Nixon Peabody’s Business and Finance Department. “We look forward to introducing David to our clients.”

David has served in a number of public sector roles—as a local elected official, a state senator, and chief of staff to ex–Rhode Island Governor Bruce Sundlun—in addition to his most recent role working with Governor Raimondo’s administration. David was also legal counsel and director of government affairs at the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corp. and an administrative magistrate in the Rhode Island Judiciary.

Beyond Rhode Island, David spent time in Washington DC as the director of intergovernmental affairs for the U.S. secretary of commerce. In this role, David worked to resolve state issues in the Commerce Department as well as put together trade missions to foreign nations that brought governors, mayors, and business leaders in touch with foreign leaders to facilitate business development.

“David is a well-known and respected figure in Rhode Island’s political circles,” added Andrew Prescott, managing partner of Nixon Peabody’s Providence office. “Our clients will benefit from the perspective David brings.”
