Shakti M. Rhys joins Nixon Peabody’s Cooperatives and Condominium practice team as counsel within the firm’s Affordable Housing & Real Estate group. Nixon Peabody is the only AmLaw100 firm in New York with a dedicated Cooperatives and Condominium practice with capabilities in both luxury and affordable for-sale housing.

“Shakti’s arrival to Nixon Peabody couldn’t have come at a more perfect time, where market demand for cooperative and condominium services remains strong,” said Erica Buckley, leader of the firm’s Cooperative and Condominium practice team. “We’re a growing practice team and we look forward to expanding our capacity to serve our developer clients more efficiently and effectively when it comes to converting properties to cooperative or condominium status.”

Shakti’s practice runs the gamut of real estate transactions—representing developers, sponsors, lenders, borrowers, and investors—with an emphasis on new construction luxury cooperative and condominium offerings, as well as rental to cooperative or condominium conversions. Shakti regularly appears before the New York State Department of Law on behalf of clients and has years of experience with the Martin Act and governing regulations.

Shakti joins Nixon Peabody with extensive experience drafting offering plans and regulatory filings for luxury projects—from new construction condominiums and occupied conversions, to timeshares and syndications. Shakti also advises on the acquisition, ownership, development and sale of complex commercial, mixed-use, and luxury residential projects.

“We’re excited to welcome Shakti to our real estate team and introduce her to our clients,” said Denise Pursley, leader of Nixon Peabody’s Affordable Housing and Real Estate group. “We have a strong national platform, from coast to coast, and it’s well suited to grow Shakti’s real estate practice. We are also excited to have her at a time when client demand for offering plans has grown substantially.”

Shakti has over 20 years of experience in real estate law. She earned her J.D. at Fordham University School of Law and B.A. from Columbia University, Barnard College.
