David Cruise is a member of Nixon Peabody’s Government Relations and Public Finance groups. As a well-known and respected figure in Rhode Island’s political circles, David works with both state and federal organizations to provide advice on the ever-changing regulatory and legislative landscape.
With over 30 years of experience as a public servant—including service as a state senator, an administrative magistrate in the Rhode Island Judiciary, the chief of staff to ex-Rhode Island Governor Bruce Sundlun and most recently as Governor Gina Raimondo’s legislative affairs director and senior advisor—I provide strategic counsel to nonprofits, publically held and privately held companies on complex legal, regulatory and compliance matters that affect their businesses on the state and federal levels.
In addition to my work in Rhode Island, I worked in Washington DC as the director of intergovernmental affairs to the secretary of commerce during the Clinton administration. I served as the direct contact to the nation’s mayors and governors, working to resolve state issues in the Commerce Department as well as putting together trade missions to foreign nations that brought U.S. governors, mayors and business leaders in touch with foreign leaders to facilitate business development.
Given my significant experience in the state and federal governments, I focus on fostering relationships between private entities and federal, state and local officials. I counsel public, private and nonprofit clients to anticipate and navigate the legislative and regulatory changes that may impact their businesses. I work with our clients to fully understand public policies and their implications which enables them to make strategic business decisions to achieve their goals and be forward-looking.
I see great opportunities on the horizon to develop relationships between public and private organizations and solve complex issues involving their interaction with the government.
