Julian K. Petty

With extensive experience in the entertainment industry, Julian Petty provides strategic career and business guidance to a variety of talent and corporate clients in music, TV, film, new media and book publishing.

Julian is recognized for his talents as a proactive deal maker and industry leader in helping clients “cross over” from one area of entertainment into another.

Prior to joining NP, Julian was a partner in a national law firm and helped establish their media and entertainment practice group. Before his law career, Julian was a manager in the community products and programming group for America Online, Inc., where he effectively managed programming and product integration of several interactive areas on the AOL service.

His passion for protecting the rights of the creative community originated during his first college internship at Def Jam Records.

What do you focus on?

Entertainment agreements and transactions

I draft and negotiate agreements for recording artists, music producers, on-screen talent, production companies, executives, songwriters and TV and film producers.

I also represent an international sporting entertainment company, for which I handle various endorsement/sponsorship and licensing agreements with major consumer products companies, and I have represented a major multinational consumer products company in its talent agreements with celebrities.

Entertainment litigation

I have experience with cases involving issues of rights of publicity, breach of contract and trademark opposition. Among the matters in which I have been involved are CBS Interactive, Inc. v. NFL Players Association, et al.; Transitional Investors, LLC v. Michael Jackson, et al.; and Notorious Entertainment, LLC v. Notorious, LLC.

What do you see on the horizon?

I believe that the consumption of entertainment content will continue to evolve at a rapid pace and consumers will have even greater control of when and where they consume. One of our challenges as entertainment attorneys is to help our clients find the right strategic partners in this new environment so when consumers do get through the clutter and are presented with the choice of our client’s work or someone else's, they make the right choice.
