Miguel Unzueta is a member of the Cross-Border Risks team. He leverages his years of international experience having served as the attaché for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Rome, Italy. What do you focus on?

I’ve gained a unique global perspective through my years of international experience having served with responsibility over Italy, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Malta, and San Mariano as the senior-most HSI attaché working with colleagues in the State Department, foreign law enforcement, and a variety of both public and private sector agencies.

In my role as the special agent in charge, I led one of the largest and most dynamic HSI offices in the country. Addressing our mandate of national security, we focused on long-term criminal investigations that targeted global criminal organizations involved in the illegal transportation of commercial cargo, illicit narcotics, weapons, currency, human trafficking, and the illegal transfer of critical technologies.

I began my federal law enforcement career with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in 1983, and have an extensive background as an undercover operative. I served in a number of executive positions during a tour of duty at the U.S. Customs Service Headquarters in Washington, DC.

In my current role, I advise and provide counsel to a wide range of corporations and individuals relative to state and federal investigations. I focus on complex civil and criminal matters involving government investigations and white-collar criminal defense. I have extensive experience and have traveled globally to consult on far-reaching visa matters.

What do you see on the horizon?

Global partnerships and fostering international relations will continue to provide the backdrop of our efforts and continued successes. Emerging world markets remain an area of focus.
