This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. By commemorating this milestone, we recognize the importance of this moment in our nation’s history and look toward continued, meaningful advancements in LGBTQ+ rights.
On a summer night in June 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in the heart of Greenwich Village. This raid sparked an uprising by the LGBTQ+ community and ignited the modern fight for LGBTQ+ equality.
Fifty years later, we’re commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising through a variety of educational events and pro bono service projects taking place at Nixon Peabody offices across the U.S. during the month of June. These activities include pro bono transgender name change clinics, educational panels on subjects including the history and future prospects of LGBTQ+ civil rights laws, and screenings of a video created in partnership with the “It Gets Better Project.”
