    Introduction

Edward Washington is a member of Nixon Peabody’s Complex Commercial Disputes practice group. He has successfully settled conflicts or prevailed at trial as one of the firm’s lead counsel in litigation for individuals and corporations on a wide variety of matters. Relying upon strong and longstanding relationships developed as a circuit court judge in Cook County for 15 years, Ed provides valuable guidance and strategic advice to counsel and assists clients in managing risk, making difficult decisions and solving complicated problems. As Chairman of the Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board, Ed led internal ethics investigations, sometimes in conjunction with law enforcement agencies. He also has experience in federal and state regulatory compliance in the energy and telecommunications industries and has served as a mediator in sensitive personal claims against high-profile individuals as well as private and political entities.

    My focus

I leverage more than 20 years of experience as a litigator, mediator, judge and educator to provide strategic counsel to my clients in commercial disputes and regulatory matters. As a jurist for 15 years, I have presided over complex civil jury cases, including medical malpractice, product liability and commercial matters and mediated many settlements on the eve of trial. I currently represent judges, lawyers, physicians and other professionals before disciplinary agencies.

Before serving on the bench, I worked for two national law firms in complex litigation and government relations; served in the cabinet with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and on the Illinois Commerce Commission during the deregulation of the telecommunications and energy industries that had a national impact on the development of today’s markets; and worked as senior regulatory attorney for a Fortune 500 telecommunications corporation.

Having the perspective of serving on the bench, as a government lawyer and working in-house and in private practice as well, I understand clients’ unique concerns with respect to not only the litigation process, trials and appeals, but the political environment, corporate imaging and confidentiality. I quickly learn highly technical, proprietary business methods and am sensitive to the need to provide high-quality client service while being mindful of case management and cost-effective representation.

My unique skill set as a trial lawyer coupled with my insight as a jurist and an ability to sense the underlying practical and/or social dynamics in litigation are valuable tools that benefit my clients, fortifying their position to prevail in litigation or reach a beneficial settlement.

    Looking ahead

The business, political and social environment is constantly changing with the increase of available information and development of technology. Lawyers have to be continuously aware of these complexities in order to advocate effectively for their clients.
