Meet Barry Carrigan - Project Finance, Public Finance - Rochester, NY

What made you decide to become a lawyer?
I was looking for a change. I graduated from college with a degree in finance and economics and was working as a consultant for a large firm, but I was seeking a different challenge.

What do you love about Nixon Peabody? What do you think makes Nixon Peabody stand out?
I love the collegial nature of Nixon Peabody. Colleagues here often times will drop everything to help you achieve the best results for clients. NP also has excellent mentors who really take the time to invest in you and your career.

Also, the best part of working in Project Finance and Public Finance is collaborating with many subject-matter experts on cross-disciplinary teams. I’ve learned so much and I continue to grow under the mentorship of the excellent lawyers at NP.

What are you passionate about outside of your legal practice. Are you active in any organizations/causes? Any sports or hobbies you’re passionate about?
I’m very active with and serve as vice president of the board for Harbor House of Rochester, which provides temporary lodging for the families of adult critical care patients who live outside the Rochester area and are receiving care at the University of Rochester Medical Center or other area hospitals. Harbor House provides a safe and supportive “home-away-from-home” that eases the emotional and financial burdens on families.

I’m also an avid follower of my alma mater Syracuse University sports—football, basketball and lacrosse!

Who inspires you and why?
My mother. She raised three boys on her own working multiple jobs to provide us with everything we wanted or needed to succeed.

What book has influenced you the most and why?
Intelligence in Nature: An Inquiry into Knowledge by Jeremy Narby. I enjoyed how it provides many examples on how independent intelligence is not unique to humanity alone.

What is your favorite movie and why?
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs because it is simply hilarious.

What is your favorite travel destination and why?
Any lake house or cabin—doesn’t matter where—because it’s so relaxing. Another thing most people don’t know about me is I enjoy fishing and I try to take a few trips a year.
