Individuals and businesses that own real estate in Rhode Island must take note of the deadline to file an appeal of the property tax assessment.

    What’s the Impact?

    • Property owners must adhere to the three filing deadlines
    • The deadline to make the first tax payment triggers the window of time in which a property owner must file an appeal

If you or your business owns real estate in Rhode Island and you are considering filing an appeal of the property tax assessment, please be advised that there are multiple deadlines that a property owner should follow during the course of the year. The first deadline is January 31, 2022, when the property owner must file a Notice of Intent to Bring an Account. The second deadline is to file the Account by March 15, 2022. The Account states the property owner’s belief as to the “true and full value” of the property and itemizes the assets that comprise the property. The third deadline is later in the year once the property owner receives the tax bill from the municipality. The deadline to make the first tax payment triggers a 90-day window of time in which a property owner must file an appeal of the assessment to the Assessor for the City or Town where the property is located. Attorneys at Nixon Peabody have the experience to assist property owners with filing these documents.
