The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may designate a country for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) when conditions in that country prevent the safe return of its nationals. Syria was initially designated for TPS on March 29, 2012, and on August 1, 2019, DHS announced an 18-month extension of Syria’s TPS designation through March 31, 2021.
On September 23, 2019, DHS announced that current Syrian beneficiaries of TPS who wish to retain that status through March 31, 2021, must re-register between September 23, 2019 and November 22, 2019. Re-registration procedures are available on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. Syrian TPS beneficiaries who timely re-register will be entitled to an automatic 180-day extension of their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) through March 28, 2020.
