Tell us a little about your career and the organization(s) you work with.
I am a healthcare attorney and serve as chief legal officer and general counsel for Hoag, a healthcare organization dedicated to building a better health future. We offer world-class, compassionate care with a focus on innovation and personalization. I am proud to be part of Hoag's mission and vision and to support its growth and development as the leading healthcare provider in the Orange County region.
Why do you do the work you do?
I greatly appreciate the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives through healthcare. Healthcare is my passion, and I feel fortunate to play a role in cultivating a culture of service, compassion, and excellence.
As someone who has had a successful career, what advice can you offer up-and-coming Asian American lawyers to help develop their own career journeys?
The best advice I’ve received is to try to find meaning and purpose in your work. This is a journey that starts with understanding your values, what you are passionate about, and what you want to contribute to the world. Be bold when opportunities present themselves, take some risks, and push beyond your comfort zone. Surround yourself with people who will support you, mentor you, and inspire you. And don’t forget to be proud of who you are and celebrate your achievements.
How has your heritage guided your leadership style?
My parents immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong to seek education and opportunity. They taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and seizing opportunities. They also taught me to be humble and respectful. I try to really listen to my colleagues, our patients, and the community and lead by aligning those needs, interests, and goals with my vision of Hoag.
Is there a specific project or recent success you’re particularly proud of that you would like to share?
We’ve recruited some of the finest physicians from across the country. Their expertise not only expands our capabilities but contributes to an environment of providers that advances the state of medicine. I’m excited to continue fostering this remarkable synergy and making a lasting impact on healthcare.
