Introduction
Julia Casteleiro represents private, public, and nonprofit owners and developers of affordable housing. She works with clients in complex financing transactions involving LIHTC, tax-exempt bonds, and federal, state, and local government subsidies.
My focus
Real Estate
I work with clients to navigate through all aspects of acquiring, financing, and developing multifamily housing, from the first steps of negotiating a purchase and sale agreement to reviewing and finalizing closing documents. I’ve also worked with many of the development teams involved with the preservation and rehabilitation of public housing owned by the New York City Housing Authority. This representation has included not only negotiating the financing aspects but also long-term ground leases, community facility leases, and commercial leases.
Community Impact
Prior to joining Nixon Peabody, I worked on the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. The campaign experience had a great impact on me and enforced my desire for my work to have a more direct and positive impact. Given the opportunity to expand my practice to affordable housing at Nixon Peabody, I was able to work with clients toward the common goal of providing safe and affordable housing.
In addition to working within the community at large, I also enjoy contributing to the NP community, and am proud to be a member of the NP’s Mental Health and Well-Being Committee, which seeks to raise awareness and support mental health and wellness initiatives in the legal community. I am an active member of Nixon’s LGBTQ resource group.
Representative experience
Julia works on all aspects of commercial real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, tax exemptions, development agreements, leasing, financing, and refinancing.
Julia represents clients nationwide and is admitted to both the New York and New Jersey bars.
Looking ahead
There is an existing and ever-growing need for safe and affordable housing nationwide and many municipalities, cities, and states are prioritizing this need. I see this area remaining a priority, and I look forward to working with clients to navigate through the ever-changing nature of this business and complexities of these transactions.
