    Introduction

    Described in IAM Patent 1000 (2024) as having a “reputation for success cultivated over the past two decades, mak[ing] him a top choice for technology companies, life sciences companies, and research centers looking to protect or enforce their most valued innovations,” Shawn Hansen has represented clients in more than 100 intellectual property cases in federal district courts throughout the United States as well as the International Trade Commission, Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

    • Arguing a winning appeal for the University of California at the Federal Circuit from an inter partes Review finding by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board about a patent on filament LED technology; and
    • Winning a preliminary injunction against false advertising and partial summary judgment on substantial portions of a patent infringement and false advertising case against W.R. Grace & Co.-Conn. in the District of Maryland about additives used in oil refining processes.

    /Representative experience

    • G.W. Aru, LLC, et al. v. W.R. Grace & Co.-Conn. (D. Md.) — Won a preliminary injunction against false advertising and partial summary judgment on substantial portions of patent infringement and false advertising claims for G.W. Aru, LLC, et al., in a case involving additives used in oil refining processes that is set for a jury trial in May 2025.
    • The Regents of The University of California v. Satco Products, Inc. (Fed. Cir.) — Argued a winning appeal of an inter partes review finding by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board about a UC patent on filament LED technology. This appeal is part of a broader patent enforcement campaign to protect UC’s patent rights in filament LED technology that was invented by a Nobel laureate-led team at UC Santa Barbara.
    • Catilina Nominees Proprietary Ltd. et al. v. Stericycle, Inc. (N.D. Il.) — Served as lead counsel in a patent infringement and false advertising case regarding safe medical waste containers for clinical settings.
    • Modern Font Applications LLC v. Alaska Airlines, Inc. (Fed. Cir.) — Won a precedential opinion from the Federal Circuit on protective order confidentiality issues in a patent lawsuit regarding non-standard fonts in mobile apps.
    • Astellas Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine International v. ImStem Biotechnology, et al. (D. Mass.) — Represented Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine International (SCRMI) in an action for correction of patent inventorship and state law claims alleging wrongful acquisition, misuse, disclosure, and conversion of Astellas’s and SCRMI’s patented mesenchymal stem cell inventions.
    • TrickleStar LLC v. Embertec Pty. Ltd. (PTAB) — Served as lead counsel for Australian manufacturer of power management technology in a successful petition for inter partes review invalidating all challenged claims of a competitor’s patent.
    • Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ltd., et al. v. Actavis Laboratories FL, Inc. (D. Del.) — Was counsel for co-plaintiff Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in a concluded ANDA action regarding generic version of Xifaxan® antibiotic for reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) recurrence in adults and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in adults.
    • Johnstech International Corp. v. JF Technology Berhad, et al. (N.D. Cal.) — Was lead trial counsel for a manufacturer defendant in a patent infringement action about semiconductor device testing equipment.
    • In the Matter of Certain Laser Abraded Denim Garments (ITC) — Was counsel for Swedish apparel retailer H&M in defense of a Section 337 action about patents relating to methods for treating textiles with lasers.
    • Skywalker Holdings v. Vuly Trampolines (D. Utah) — Served as lead counsel for a manufacturer defendant in a patent infringement action regarding trampoline safety equipment.
    • Priewasser v. Lintec Corporation, et al. <(D. Ariz.) — Was counsel for a Germany-based plaintiff against a Japanese defendant in an action for fraud and correction of inventorship related to semiconductor back-grinding tape technology. Conducted numerous depositions at the United States consulate in Osaka, Japan.
    • Digital Air Technologies, LLC v. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (C.D. Cal.) — Served as lead counsel for patentee plaintiff in a patent infringement action regarding special effects technology used in production of advertisements.
    • Arrowhead Media Holdings, LLC v. David Keighley Productions 70MM Inc. (C.D. Cal.) — Was co-lead counsel for David Keighley Productions 70MM Inc. (a wholly owned subsidiary of IMAX Corporation) in defense of patent infringement claims.
    • Fuhu, Inc. v. Toys“R”Us, Inc. — Served as co-lead counsel for Fuhu in an action against Toys“R”Us (TRU) for trade secret misappropriation.
    • Visto Corp. v. Microsoft (E.D. Tex.) — Was counsel for Visto Corp. in a patent infringement action about patents directed to smartphone synchronization technology.
    • Visto Corp. v. Research In Motion(E.D. Tex.) — Was counsel for Visto Corp. in one of several patent infringement actions against RIM, which settled for $267.5 million.
    • Visto Corp. v. Seven Networks, Inc. (E.D. Tex.) — Was a member of a trial team that secured a jury verdict of willful patent infringement and a 19.75% reasonable royalty rate.
