Introduction
Alexandra (“Allie”) A. Mitropoulos represents private and public colleges and universities nationwide, serving as a trusted strategic partner to senior leadership while also partnering closely with stakeholders across institutions—from boards and presidents to HR professionals, student affairs teams, deans and chairs, and frontline administrators. Allie is regularly called upon to guide institutions through sensitive, high-risk situations where legal exposure, reputational concerns, and institutional mission intersect, ranging from contract negotiations to complex student discipline, internal investigations, tenure issues, and federal regulatory compliance. She draws on extensive experience advising senior institutional leadership and serving as a GC-level strategic advisor to colleges and universities navigating governance challenges, regulatory scrutiny, investigations, crisis response, and mission-aligned growth. Allie also defends institutions in a wide range of litigation matters in state and federal courts and administrative agencies.
My focus
I help education, nonprofit, and business clients prevent, manage, respond, and resolve complex compliance, risk issues, and operational challenges. My practice centers on helping employers, private K–12 schools, and institutions of higher education navigate legally complex and reputationally sensitive matters with clarity, sound judgment, and a consistent, reliable partnership that clients can depend on.
I am known for being a steady, accessible presence in high-stakes moments, ensuring that my clients have practical, clear guidance when it matters most.
I work alongside my clients as both legal counsel and strategic partner, working with stakeholders across organizations and ensuring that both leadership and those responsible for day-to-day implementation are aligned, supported, and equipped to move forward effectively.
TITLE IX, CLERY, AND CAMPUS SAFETY
I advise institutions on Title IX compliance, the Clery Act, student affairs issues, faculty misconduct, and campus safety and security, including crisis preparedness and response. I partner closely with leadership, Title IX coordinators, and student affairs professionals to ensure coordinated, thoughtful responses that prioritize both compliance and community trust.
DATA PRIVACY AND EDUCATION RECORDS
I counsel clients on state, federal, and international data privacy regulations, including FERPA, and support privacy-forward policy development and contracting practices.
INVESTIGATIONS, EMPLOYMENT, AND TRAINING
I conduct and oversee complex internal investigations and advise on a broad range of employment issues, including pay equity, discrimination and retaliation risk, and workplace policies and practices. I also develop and deliver training for institutional and organizational stakeholders.
LITIGATION AND COMPLEX CONTRACTS
I defend colleges and universities in state and federal court and advise on complex contracts in the higher education and nonprofit context.
Looking ahead
Higher education institutions are navigating a period of sustained and accelerating change, shaped by shifting federal and state policy priorities, increased political and public scrutiny, and growing expectations from boards, donors, and campus stakeholders. Routine institutional decisions are increasingly subject to external attention and can quickly escalate into matters carrying significant legal, operational, and reputational risk. At the same time, institutions face mounting financial pressures driven by demographic shifts, declining enrollment, and rising costs, requiring leaders to pursue new models for growth and sustainability. Against this backdrop, colleges and universities must balance mission, compliance, and innovation while operating in an environment of heightened enforcement and public visibility.
/Prior Experience
While earning dual degrees at Boston College Law School and the Boston College Lynch School of Education, Allie served as a law clerk in the Office of General Counsel at Northeastern University and as a legal intern in the Region One office of the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. Upon graduation, she received the William J. O’Keefe Award for outstanding service and contributions to the community. Prior to joining Nixon, Allie worked for a boutique law firm in Boston representing institutions of higher education, including serving as Deputy General Counsel for Berklee College of Music in Boston for nearly nine years.
