Affordable Housing and Real Estate Deputy Practice Leader Deborah VanAmerongen, joins “The Housing Problem” podcast to discuss the legacy and future of New York State’s Mitchell-Lama program. This initiative has long provided affordable rental and cooperative housing to low- and middle-income households.
This conversation builds on insights our Affordable Housing & Real Estate Team shared in our May 20, 2025 client alert, where we discussed how the New York State budget introduced significant real property relief for Mitchell-Lama developments. As we noted then, the budget reduces the property tax burden on these properties in New York City and opens the door for similar relief in other municipalities across the state. These changes are a critical step toward preserving the long-term sustainability of affordable housing under the Mitchell-Lama program.
