    Introduction

Sorinel Cimpoes is a patent attorney practicing in both the Patents group and the Intellectual Property Litigation group. He represents clients with technology in the mechanical and electromechanical fields before the U.S. Patent Office and in federal litigation. He focuses his practice on three main areas, leveraging more than 16 years of experience to help clients manage their patent portfolios and litigation.

    Practice Areas

    Intellectual Property

    My focus

    Patent Prosecution

I have prosecuted hundreds of applications in diverse technological areas, including medical devices, currency counters, electrical equipment, wagering games, microscopy systems, laser technology, etc. My approach is to attempt and interview each and every case. A personal discussion with the respective Patent Examiner, whether on the telephone or in person, has proven to achieve the most efficient results toward an issued patent (the general ultimate goal!).

    Patent Counseling and Strategy

I conduct regular conferences, in person and on the telephone, with clients to discuss current and future patent protection needs. I study and review my client’s business objectives to anticipate how the patent needs should develop. What is it that the client needs—a large patent portfolio for leveraging competitor portfolios or a minimal patent portfolio with focused patent protection.

    Patent Litigation

I have assisted in numerous litigation cases in which I successfully applied my prosecution skills, including claim construction of medical devices, invalidity contentions related to farm equipment, infringement contentions related to voice communications, etc. While the approach of focusing on either litigation or prosecution has some advantages, I strongly believe that a great patent attorney requires both sets of skills.

    Looking ahead

I’ve been working closely with clients to efficiently manage their patent and litigation needs and foresee that, on a fairly regular basis, I will be attending clients’ in-house brainstorming and strategy sessions to identify future needs and develop methods for protecting those needs.
