Sumeet Sharma represents investors, syndicators, developers, lenders and nonprofit organizations on real estate, finance, tax and regulatory issues affecting affordable housing, community development, historic preservation, renewable energy, commercial real estate and general business transactions.
I help clients structure and close complex financing transactions that use affordable housing tax credits and related incentives. The financing is applied to mixed-income and mixed-use affordable housing developments across the country, both metropolitan and rural areas alike.
I also help clients on transactions involving new markets tax credits. Developing and operating successful projects involves identifying and resolving structural, legal and tax issues, procuring and structuring multiple layers of financing and subsidies and ensuring regulatory compliance. I make sure my clients’ projects—which include office and retail, health clinics, charter schools, manufacturing centers and industrial facilities for example—close smoothly.
Another aspect of my practice encompasses commercial real estate. I counsel clients on all aspects of these transactions, from acquisitions, development and leasing, to financing, debt restructuring and workout matters.
When not structuring and closing deals, I enjoy speaking at national tax credit industry conferences, publishing articles on various real estate and corporate issues, coaching a high school debate team and mentoring students through programs at local schools and my undergraduate university’s honors semester in DC program.
I believe that the dedicated and innovative business parties and service professionals in this industry will continue to work together to find ways to broaden the impact of community development activities in this continuously dynamic business, legal and political climate. I work with clients to identify opportunities for such partnerships.
