    Introduction

    Dr. Shayne Huff assists clients from academic and nonprofit medical institutions to startup companies and large corporations, in identifying intellectual property and securing patent rights.

    /My focus

    My practice is devoted to biotechnology.  I work with clients to identify  their intellectual property and develop cost-effective strategies to protect their rights. I focus on IP portfolio development and management on a domestic and global scale. I draw from my broad base of scientific knowledge to successfully represent my clients in the legal arena of securing IP protection. I have extensive experience in foreign prosecution, especially in Europe, Japan and China, and have worked closely with clients to develop strong patent portfolios in these and other countries.

    Representative areas of technical experience:

    • Neurobiology, both diagnostics and therapeutics for injury and disease.
    • Molecular Biology and Genetics as tools for research, diagnostics and Therapeutics, including antibodies, nucleic acids, and proteins
    • Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, including multipotency induction and use of adult stem cells as therapeutics.
    • Exosome/Microvesicle based diagnostics and therapeutics.
    • Immunology based diagnostics and therapeutics.
    • Cancer therapeutics and companion diagnostics.

    In addition, I provide counseling related to patentability and freedom of operation for product development.

    /Representative experience

    • Currently working closely with a University based startup company to develop and manage a portfolio based on the development and use of biological sensors for pathogen detection and elimination.
    • Currently working with a university and licensee to secure patent rights for breast cancer diagnostics tracking miRNA expression.
    • Successfully defended a European patent for a companion diagnostic in cancer therapy in an Opposition (P 106 731 EPPC).

    /Looking ahead

    Discoveries in the field of neuroscience will begin to translate to the development of much needed diagnostics and therapeutics for physical and psychological disorders.
